Journeymen Acoustic Duo by
Darryl Trombley
Before I open the 2008 journal I
would like to acknowledge a few folks who have shown great
support for us through out 2007. First and foremost our
families. Tracie, Karen thank you both for understanding that
we need to play just like we need to breath. Thank you
Derek for loading and unloading my gear.
Thank you!

Fritts' - The End of the road for us at Fritts' - Rick was greated by the new manager. He told Rick that he wasn't going to have us play but since we already started loading stuff in, he'll let us. He went on to say that they are chainging the format of the bar and maybe he'll keep us if we are good. When we started to play, he left. We could tell he really didn't care. We gave our notice that we will no longer be returning to Fritts'. Thanks to Trina for giving us the opportuinty way back in 2006. Thanks to Nick & Nick for good drinks and good food! It was fun while it lasted.
New Songs: No New Material
April 18th 2008
Fritts' - We reworked the layout of the sets a little yet again. Instead of solo stuff with a break in the middle, we took our breaks only while the other performed solo to keep the music going. I don't think anyone noticed or cared. As the evening wore on it turned into Bike night with someone riding their Harley into the building and up to the bar! A reved up Harley inside a building does nothing to enhance a song.
New Songs: Long Haired Country Boy - Charlie Daniels
April 4th 2008
Fritts' - Recorded this show and it actually worked! Too bad our playing was less than stellar. Oh well, part of the fun. Rick played Electric Guitar for the first time on a gig. Armed with his new Epiphone DOT (with dotless neck) and Vox amp. We tried things a little differently with regards to the format of the show. We opened each set with Freddy the Freeloader as an intro and closed the 1st and second set with Rick and I doing Solo Tunes. I think we'll try something different next time. I dedicated People Get Ready to my Aunt Dorthy Conti, who passed away Thursday morning after battling cancer since the turn of the century. Good Bye Aunt Dorothy, you are loved and will be missed dearly.
New Songs: Freddy the Freeloader - Miles Davis
March 21st 2008
Fritts' - Great Crowd! Many familiar faces and several new ones. We played a typical set list. Not many surprises other than the Train Wrecks. Terry Joined me for False Teeth Woman as a recovery of the worst redition of Layla that I have ever performed. I couldn't key into teh right key vocally to save my life. I tried to record the evening but when I played back the song this morning - NOTHING! I was really disappointed but maybe it's for the best. It was a fun night but nothing compared to most nights.
New Songs: Danny's Song - Kenny Loggins; Dock of the Bay - Otis Reading
March 7th 2008
Fritts' - We made it through the night! I say this because I had been sick all week with the cold/flu bug that has been running rampant this year. I purposly didn't send out the email reminder for the gig because I realy didn't expect to have recovered in time to play. We still had a crowd of friends come out. Rick covered about half the material because I couldn't sing much in the first 2 sets. Thanks to Tracie, Brandy, Larry, Andrea, Heather, Liz, Paul, Eric, Mike & Sara for coming out.
New Songs: Me and Julio - Paul Simon (A patron walked by on the way to the restroom and asked if we could do some Simon and Garfunkel, By the time he returned to his seat Rick had pulled this out of his hat); Over the Hills and Far Away - Led Zepplin; Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchelle
February 22nd 2008
Fritts' - WOW. Even though we have had a steadily growing following crowd, This was the biggest crowd of folks that we have played to that were all our following. Too many friends and aquaintences to list and do justice to everyone who was there. Thanks to all of you for joining us.
New Songs: Nothing new but some very old stuff revisited. Old Love - Eric Clapton; Wee Wee Hours - Chuck Berry; Motherless Child - Barbeque Bob; St. James Infirmary - Cab Calloway
February 8th 2008
Fritts' - Every table filled, you gotta love that! Rick brought out his P-Bass that he built. He's really quite a good luthier. It sounded great, nice growl. I traded in my beloved 1988 Torino Red Fender Eric Clapton Signature Series Stratocaster for an Ibanez Artcore. I will miss my old friend which has been my main guitar for 17 years. It was time for a change. It simply wasn't a good guitar for what we are doing now and far too good of a guitar to be left hanging on a wall. The Ibanez is a Jazz style guitar. It took some getting used to but it worked out very well. Thanks to Tracie, Brandy, Larry, Rory, Mitch, Mary, Laura & Jim for sharing the evening with us.
New Songs: You Don't Treat Me No Good No More (Lover) - Sonja Dada; Let it Be - Beatles (Darryl Solo); House of the Rising Sun - Traditional (Rick Solo); The Shape You're In - Eric Clapton (I sprung this on Rick because it was on my mind and I wanted to try it. We had never practiced it and it came off pretty good.)
January 25
2008 Fritts' - Even though the
weather was terribly cold there were a lot of people there. I
brought my Ovation as my only instrument to get back to making
myslef play acoustic. It felt good and there were no
distractions of switching back and forth and retuning
instruments. I did have a couple of comments that people
missed the electric. Thanks to Tracie, Brandy, Larry, Rory,
Tom, Rich, Eric, Terry & Tracy.
New Songs: Gimme Some
Lovin - Spencer Davis Group (I had been sitting at
home playing my guitar before the show and stumbeled across
some notes for this tune. I told Rick that we were doing it
even though we had never played it together before)
January 11
2008 Fritts' - Great crowd! Very
responsive and enjoyed what we were doing. We set up a Power
Point slide show on the TV behind us to some visuals. This
worked out well and prompted a few questions and comments from
the audience. The last couple fo songs of the night were
exciting. First my hand locked up and Tracie had to give me a
quick wrist massage to loose my muscles, than a tube failed in
my amplifier and sent it into a squealing fit. This abruptly
ended our show.
New
Songs: House at Pooh Corner - Kenny
Loggins (Rick performed this song solo. We have always talked
about how we each love this tune and Rick surprised me by
pulling it out of the hat as one of his solo tunes of the
night) |
